Japanese courtyard garden

The client wanted to create an immersive green space with a Japanese styling in the unlikely neighbourhood of Clifton in Bristol.

A large landscape picture window and tall boundary walls which screen most influence of borrowed landscape meant there were already parallels with the classic situation of a Japanese temple garden.

Further to this I employed the concept of balanced asymmetry with foreground and background planting to give a sense of depth and underlying harmony.

Planting is primarily based around foliage textures with pops of colour as light levels limit flowering succession. There is a strong sense of seasonal progression in the garden although a high percentage of evergreen plants mean that the garden isn’t bare in winter.
