Small modern courtyard garden

In this very small space the clients wanted to site a new Garden Studio to accommodate a growing upholstery business. The garden studio also provided a space to create a division between work and life.

The challenge was to ensure that the studio wouldn’t dominate the space and overly foreshorten the garden. We also needed to maintain a good amount of hard stand as a flexible functional space to support the needs of a young family: option to eat outside, lie in the sun or play table tennis.

The planting was essential to softening the studio, whilst the generous hard scape and layering of materials makes the garden feel spacious. The balance of these two factors and cohesive aesthetic makes the garden feel tranquil and immersive.

Vertical elements in the powder coated steel goal posts and carefully selected small specimen trees are also essential in softening the studio and ensuring that it doesn’t feel like an afterthought.
